Enhanced Vision Systems (EVS)
CMC Electronics
- an Esterline Company -
has developed a flexible approach to EVS that
offers airlines, regionals, corporate and helicopter operators a
wide variety of sensor and display choices to satisfy varying operator
EVS requirements, performance needs and budgets. CMC’s EVS
has been selected for Bombardier and Dassault business jet applications.
IR-based EVS has also been demonstrated as a cost-effective solution
to current large helicopter “brown-out” scenarios.
Electronic Flight Bag (EFB)
The CMA-1100 PilotView™ EFB from CMC was designed to suit
commercial, corporate and helicopter “paperless cockpit”
needs. PilotView incorporates a Jeppesen database, aircraft performance
calculations including weight & balance, weather and aeronautical
data. It is video compatible and can accommodate crew communications
such as email, fax and internet/intranet services. Over 300 CMC
first generation EFBs are in service and the latest CMA-1100 has been selected by a significant number of regional and business jet OEMs for factory installation.
CMC also manufactures FMS, GPS-WAAS, SATCOM antennas and is a cockpit systems integrator.

New BAE SYSTEMS Digital Q-HUD for Air Transport
The all new Head-Up Display (Q-HUD) system from BAE SYSTEMS in the UK represents a giant leap forward in the development of Air Transport HUDs. The Q-HUD uses optical wave guide technology to avoid the need for expensive, complex, bulky and intrusive overhead projection systems and can be designed to fit a wide variety of aircraft with the same unit. For example, BAE has developed a single Q-HUD for all Boeing aircraft models including the B747. This system will allow fitment of HUD to medium and small business jets, helicopters and possibly even VLJs where there is insufficient overhead area for conventional optics packages. The new Q-HUD is fully compatible with Synthetic Vision Systems (SVS) and infrared-based Enhanced Vision Systems (EVS) which can provide lower landing minima as well as safety benefits to help prevent CFIT and provide early detection of runway incursions in darkness and poor visibility. Q-HUD represents a cost-effective, reliable and novel new approach to HUD.

Un-Powered Airport/Heliport Lighting System (UALS)
RelekTek, the US distributor for RBI Inc. which uses a highly (95%)
reflective material to simulate a powered airport or heliport lighting
system to improve viewability from the air. UALS is plainly visible
in clear air from a distance of two to four nautical miles. Pilots
can clearly see the UALS reflected in the aircraft’s landing
lights. Angled markers can even simulate a VASI. Markers can be
altered to suit the higher approach angles of helicopter operations
at oil rigs or heliports and colored material can be used for taxiway
and/or other identification markers etc. The markers are built of
aluminum and are anchored to the ground by frangible couplings in
the event of off-runway incidents. The mounting scheme allows the
markers to withstand 100 mph winds yet still collapse in a collision
with a vehicle.
UALS is ideally suited to the temporary landing requirements of
military and helicopter EMS/police operators sometimes called upon
to land in remote areas where projected lifetime of the site is
short. Pilots claim that UALS provides a view equal to a normal
heliport powered lighting array. Numerous systems in use from Canada’s
north to Florida have endured temperature extremes with no degradation
to the material.

 Speech Recognition Technology
The unique user interface technology developed by Conversay allows
flight/mission crews to interact with aircraft control or mission
software through spoken commands. It can be integrated into existing
systems to input cockpit data, manage databases, set configuration
changes – all hands-free to improve productivity, eliminate
paperwork or keyboards, and speed-up data entry. Conversay's speech
engine CASSI requires no training to recognize speech and needs
no separate speech server. CASSI has achieved up to 99% accuracies
and has been demonstrated to work exceptionally well in high ambient
noise environments and with widely variable voice accents.

Predictive Windshear System (PWS).
Swan International Pty. of Sydney, Australia has
developed an eye-safe LIDAR-based Predictive
Windshear System (PWS) for the aerospace industry. The
Swan PWS is a patented on-board detection
and alerting system for fixed and rotary wing aircraft. The
company works with Regional, Business Jet and General Aviation
OEMs and operators to contour the product to suit various aircraft
types to improve operational safety. Some aircraft are currently
equipped with reactive windshear detection systems which provide
the pilot with a warning only after the aircraft has entered
a hazardous windshear event. The patented Swan system uses
laser-based reflective energy to measure conditions ahead of
the aircraft and predicts the presence of a hazardous windshear
threat in the intended flight path some 10 – 20 seconds
before the encounter. This unique approach incorporates a hybrid
laser system operating in the eye-safe 1.5-1.8 micron wavelength
and utilizes a range of novel fiber optic and solid state components.
The system uses GPS for ground speed and spatial determination
and includes a fiber optic demodulator to detect the Doppler
shift associated with the changing wind gradient.
